No one had even heard of Enterprise Rent a Car, Power Rent a Car, Thrifty Rent a car, Payless Rent a Car, Fox Rent a Car, Priceless Rent a Car, Rent for Less Car Rental or Basic Rent a Car. Of course they had heard of Hertz and Avis and Budget, and Dollar Rent a Car. . Maybe National rent a car was a presence in .LA. My point is that Ugly Duckling Rent a Car was the pioneer along with Rent a Wreck. Rent a Wreck was very clever because they run ads under the name of Absolutely Ugly Rent a Car. They did this when we were not using the name Ugly Duckling. We Stopped using the name Ugly duckling rent a Car because the then franchisor had abrogated his contract with the franchisees and was no longer promoting the system. They wanted royalties to use the name Ugly Duckling, without honoring their end of the contact. Their franchisees all left them due to this failure on their part as the Ugly Duckling franchisor to honor the commitment. We had promoted the name Ugly Duckling in the local markets for 15 years before this. The Name Ugly Duckling was known in West LA and Santa Monica solely due to our efforts and our advertising. The Rent a Wreck people recognized that we had established the name Ugly Duckling and therefore were able to capitalize on it by using the abbreviated name, Absolutely Ugly rent a car. We on the other hand never saw fit to use a name ourselves like rent a car, not a wreck, or rent a wrecked car or rental wreck or any other derivation. Because we and the other franchises had advertised so thoroughly the name Ugly Duckling was known all over the US and Europe. The name appeared in several publications like America on $20. A Day. For their bargain rent a car listings , Ugly Duckling was always at the top Even today, because of our long standing and widespread reputation, people find us because of our first name Ugly Duckling Rent a car. G and R Rent a Car and Ugly Duckling Rent a car are synonymous because of the reputation we have built over the years. Before Ugly Duckling and Rent a Wreck, there were NO used car rentals in California, maybe anywhere in the USA. We were the leaders.

Enterprise Rent a Car came along and started building stores everywhere. In Los Angeles they have 25 stores in a 5 mile radius. Enterprise rent a car is a vast network of car rental offices. Ugly Duckling had 600 franchises spread over 50 states. The concept of a cheap rent a car opened the door for Enterprise. Before this, Hertz and Avis, the big two charged more than they do today and concentrated on corporate accounts. Enterprise has forced them into the neighborhood business to preserve market share. Ugly Duckling was the first to show that cars could be rented cheaply. Cheap rent a cars as a concept was started by us. We have helped lower the prices for everyone in LA. We have been at the same location for over 20 years. We are the same people and for 15 of those years, people knew us as Ugly Duckling Rent a Car. We have been consistently giving the same great low low prices we did all those years as Ugly Duckling Rent a Car even though people know us as G & R Rent a Car. We promoted the concept of Ugly Duckling because we believed in low low prices for used car rentals.
